Mike Kentzer’s talk from Deepest Norfolk was a delight in three parts

Our first speaker of the season really got the interest of everyone, having travelled all the way from Norfolk, by starting with some superb Seahorse covers.

The beginning of the talk revolved around the use of the iconic George V seahorse stamps on cover and of necessity, this meant looking at covers that had made long-distance journeys to South America, Australia and beyond. We saw some extremely rare items and some covers which told wonderful stories of journies across the globe.

The second half of the talk was split into two; the first part covered the change in 1813, allowing Scotland to charge an extra ½ d on every letter in or out of Scotland. These Scottish ½ d tax marks provided a fascinating view of the type of correspondence that was sent from across Britain and the rest of the world, and some extremely rare tax marks, including one or two that may well be unique.

To finish, we were treated to Scarborough and Whitby postal History; a story in picture postcards and cancels of the development of postal services in that area.
