Mauritius with David Sigee
Early Mauritius material is always a sight to behold, containing as it does some of the more iconic stamps and covers of early philately.
David told the story of early Mauritius through the eyes of a stamp exhibition held in Berlin, entitled The “Meeting of the Queens” in 2011. The Blue Penny Museum says on its website
In September 2011, the legendary red and blue Mauritius Post Office stamps were brought together at the prestigious Museum for Communication Berlin for an outstanding exhibition. Stamp collectors from around the world were able to admire these postage stamps, which represent the very best of world philately due to their rarity and renown. The visiting public thus had the chance to admire 18 of the 27 remaining specimens, out of the 1,000 that were originally printed in 1847.
These famous stamps were issued over 160 years ago by the British colony of Mauritius and the remaining specimens are today the property of the Royal Philatelic Collection of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the British Library, the Postal Museums in Hague and Stockholm, the Blue Penny Museum in Mauritius and a number of very lucky private collectors.
His talk was illustrated with a slide show and some philatelic material, along with books and a display of where the stamps had been previously shown.
The vote of thanks was given by Nick Rolfe and we thank David for his fascinating presentation.
