A life in Philately with Vincent Green from Sandafayre
We were delighted to welcome Vincent Green from a local auction house, Sandafayre, to our recent meeting. His talk was entitled ‘A Life in Philately’ and what an amazing story he told, from his very first job at a stamp dealer in Altrincham to his current day position as MD of Sandafayre.
His talk featured tales of philatelic days gone by, about jetting across the world to view collections and buying and selling some of the most amazing philatelic material available.
His display was not as extensive as many other speakers, but what it lacked in quantity was most definitely made up for in quality. Featured items included the largest commercially used cover in the world, from the German inflation period, as well as the world’s smallest letter, a Swedish ‘feather cover’, some El Salvador early material, a May 5th 1840 cover, the day before the introduction of the Penny Black, and several other penny black and tuppeny blue covers, including the Penny Black with the largest margins in the world.
The vote of thanks was given by Jonathan Guy and the society would like to thank Vincent for his kindness in sharing his stories and material with us.
